Title: The Work and the World
\nSpeaker: Prof Keith Wilson<\/a>
\n<\/strong>
\nKeith Wilson<\/a> completed a major new commission Steles<\/a> ready for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, works that remain as a key part of the new Queen Elizabeth Park. His most recent curatorial project (with Penelope Curtis) was Modern British Sculpture<\/a> at the Royal Academy in 2011, and as part of British Art Show 7<\/a> he produced new sculptures at each venue as the exhibition toured the country. He lives and works in Sheffield.<\/p>\n

Taking the recent unveiling of his public sculpture in Leeds<\/a> as the starting point, this seminar will look more broadly at the history of sculpture doing jobs of work, and will speculate about the strengths and weaknesses of such public functioning across time and place. He will look at a central paradox for studio artists, who require an introspective model of production to simultaneously face out to a wider world. The seminar will speculate about what the contemporary world might want from its artists.<\/p>\n
