It requires a long, complex, multidisciplinary rehabilitation process in order to re-learn the skills needed for daily living, and to integrate this \u2018new normal\u2019 into a person\u2019s identity and lifestyle. Greater patient participation in this process has been linked to better functional outcomes and sense of control, but how do we define \u2018participation\u2019? And how do patient values or priorities fit into medical decision-making processes?<\/p>\n<p>In this lunchtime seminar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gem_wheeler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gemma Wheeler<\/a> will be describing her experiences in an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Collaborative Doctoral Award between the Glasgow School of Art and the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit, Glasgow. This study brought together patients, family members and healthcare professionals to explore and enhance patient engagement and participation in this rehabilitation process. The talk will describe how a mixed-method approach led to the co-creation of new opportunities in the patient pathway for mutual learning and collaborative decision-making, and the implications this has for Design practice more widely.
