Title: Critical Care: the position of artist and patient in artworks made in care contexts
\nSpeaker: Dr Becky Shaw<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

I explore the relationship between individual and society through live artworks made in care, education and production contexts. Works are made through rigorous responsiveness to situation, with no prior known outcome. I teach undergraduate creative art practice and MA Fine Art and am the Postgraduate Research Tutor for ADRC. I am particularly interested in creative research methods.<\/p>\n

When artists are employed to make work in care contexts there are many expectations at play, including that they will bring beauty, do good, engage, enlighten, and facilitate, expose or critique. Key commentators offer vastly diverging perspectives- seeing artists as either social agents to support vulnerable others, or antagonistic, irresponsible social critics (Jackson, 2011). Through presenting a number of works made in healthcare contexts (between 2001 and 2013) I will, explore a more complicated relationship where the work is a site for the negotiated subjectivity and visibility of both artist and patient.<\/p>\n
