{"id":2483,"date":"2017-07-24T11:10:43","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T10:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2018-07-26T12:14:31","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T11:14:31","slug":"esther-johnson-sunderland-echo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/esther-johnson-sunderland-echo\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Esther Johnson interviewed for Sunderland Echo at ceremony honouring WW1 soldier shot at dawn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/esther-johnson\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Esther Johnson<\/a>, Professor of Film &amp; Media Arts and Principal Lecturer in Film &amp; Media Production at Sheffield Hallam University, featured in an article for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sunderland Echo<\/a> last week, in which Esther spoke about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1418now.org.uk\/commissions\/asunder\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Asunder<\/em><\/a>, why the North East was chosen as the focus and her choice of stories featured in the film.<\/p>\n<p>The article describes a service held in Ypres to honour Sunderland soldier Robert Hope, shot at dawn for desertion 100 years ago. The Deptford-born former shipyard worker, who was more than likely shell-shocked by what he had witnessed in one of Britain\u2019s bloodiest battles, was one of 306 men shot at dawn by their comrades in the conflict. Robert was shot on July 5, 1917 and has since been posthumously pardoned.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/files\/2017\/07\/JOHNSON-2017-07-Ypres-3-smaller.jpg?w=860&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Picture of Robert Hope's grave in Ypres with wreath. Her poetic portraits focus on marginal worlds, revealing resonant stories that may otherwise remain hidden or ignored. Work has been exhibited internationally in 40 countries, and has also featured on television and radio. In 2012 Johnson won the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Performing and Visual Arts for young scholars. She is a Professor of Film &amp; Media Art at Sheffield Hallam University.
