{"id":2186,"date":"2017-06-19T14:21:55","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T13:21:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2019-02-04T17:05:37","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T17:05:37","slug":"vr-tech4good-awards-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/vr-tech4good-awards-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Reality project reaches the finals of AbilityNet Tech4Good Awards 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tech4goodawards.com\/finalist\/sheffieldhallam\/\" target=\"_blank\">A project that uses Virtual Reality (VR) technology to improve the training for amputees in the use of electronic prosthetic limbs<\/a> has reached the finals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abilitynet.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">AbilityNet<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tech4goodawards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tech4Good Awards 2017<\/a>. \u00a0The project is one of four finalist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tech4goodawards.com\/meet-the-2017-finalists\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Health<\/a> category and is one of 32 finalists eligible for public votes in the People&#8217;s Award.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0team of researchers,\u00a0including\u00a0C3RI&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/ivan-phelan\" target=\"_blank\">Ivan Phelan<\/a>\u00a0(Researcher in Games Development), has applied technology first developed for VR games to train amputees in a range of everyday kitchen tasks, including turning on taps and slicing up food. This\u00a0new technology enables researchers, healthcare professionals and amputees alike\u00a0to see how a new\u00a0electronic limb will work in real life and to improve its function.
