His research focuses on pattern recognition and sensor design for a wide variety of applications from robotics and automation, to medical engineering, security, games and animation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>In this post, Marcos explains how a new partnership between Sheffield Hallam and a major American IT company sees the University &#8216;leading locally and engaging globally&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/university-leadership-team\" target=\"_blank\">University Leadership Team<\/a> updated staff on the new University strategy one of the key underpinning principles is &#8216;leading locally and engaging globally&#8217;. Here I\u2019d like to describe an initiative between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/what-we-do\" target=\"_blank\">C3RI<\/a>, Communication &amp; Computing Research Centre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/research-centres\/communication-and-computing-research-centre\" target=\"_blank\">CCRC<\/a>), Geometric Modelling and Pattern Recognition Research Group (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/what-we-do\/projects\/information-technology-and-interactions\/gmpr-geometric-modelling-and-pattern-recognition-research-group\" target=\"_blank\">GMPR<\/a>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/academic-departments\/engineering-and-mathematics\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Engineering and Mathematics<\/a> that illustrates a contribution to these matters.<\/p>\n<p>On 21 March 2017 on behalf of SHU, Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/dave-waddington\" target=\"_blank\">David Waddington<\/a>\u00a0signed a Collaboration Agreement with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prgx.com\" target=\"_blank\">PRGX<\/a>, a global, NASDAQ-listed IT company based in Atlanta, US. The agreement will support our MSc students in the Department of Engineering and Mathematics. PRGX will grant scholarships worth \u00a33,000 each on a continuous base to our students during the 3-month dissertation stage \u2013 normally June-August, October-December or February-April of each year.<\/p>\n<p>The MSc dissertations will focus on the general area known as Data Science: to extract new information or knowledge from large amounts of data (structured or unstructured). The data will be provided by PRGX through granting student\u2019s access to their secure servers.\u00a0Selected students must have successfully completed the Applicable Artificial Intelligence module.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of typical projects would be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to analyse textual data or textual descriptions and group these into categories using Artificial Intelligence Deep Learning techniques, or<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>to perform image recognition and classification using convolution networks and deep learning techniques, or<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>related transformations to both text and images for data classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expected frameworks to be investigated and exploited by individual students include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TensorFlow (Google),<\/li>\n<li>Torch (Facebook),<\/li>\n<li>Theano Python libraries,<\/li>\n<li>Deep Learning for Java,<\/li>\n<li>Matlab Deep Learning,<\/li>\n<li>Caf\u00e9 Deep Learning Framework,<\/li>\n<li>Digits (NVIDIA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a clear example of SHU engaging globally to enhance our students\u2019 experience and broadening our research into AI techniques with industry-relevant problems.
