It’s fantastic to see the photographs from Professor Esther Johnson\u2019s \u2018The Beacons of Hull<\/a><\/b>\u2019 book featured in ‘The Grid’ section of The Observer<\/a> on Sunday 25th<\/sup> February:<\/p>\n

Growing up in Hull,\u00a0Esther Johnson<\/a>\u00a0loved the city\u2019s distinctive cream telephone boxes. They are cream instead of red because Hull was the only place in England where the local council ran the public phone network. The artist and film-maker has now tracked down and photographed the remaining K8 kiosks, designed by architect Bruce Martin in 1965. \u2018It\u2019s a slick, functional design \u2013 modern and quite space-age, for the time,\u2019 Johnson says. Nine of these kiosks, in the local Honeysuckle Cream tone, were\u00a0given Grade II-listed status in February 2023<\/a>. \u2018The series isn\u2019t just about nostalgia \u2013 it\u2019s about noticing what\u2019s in your environment and preserving these things for future generations,\u2019 says Johnson. \u2018Hull sometimes gets a bad rap, but there\u2019s a lot of charm to the city\u2019.
