It suggests that research in the context of artistic and creative practice could have a special relation to time; simultaneously attaching itself to a prior moment in time and from there propelling imagination to unforeseen futures. The theme proposes reassessments where the evaluation of past events, integral to research, is in unison with the anticipation potential, integral to the arts. It wonders about new conceptions of an idea, place, space, object, and ways of doing and making that emerge from a reverse glance — the challenges, updates, and improvements.

The Art of Research conferences promote the continuous dialogue of research practices in art and design. The previous seven international conferences have contributed to the development of rapidly growing and spreading discourse on artistic and practice-led research. Over the two decades, the conferences have had a significant role in engaging in multiple notions of research where diverse modes of creative practice are used as catalysts for enquiry.

The conference is organized by Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="12795" data-permalink="https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/c3riimpact/rose-butler-aalto-art-of-research/mfsha_viiifi042-still015/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/blogs.shu.ac.uk/c3riimpact/files/2024/01/MfSHA_VIIIFi042-.Still015.jpg?fit=720%2C576&ssl=1" data-orig-size="720,576" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1675267021","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Film frame from archival footage at the Stasi Records Agency, Berlin depicting agents during briefcase camera training in the 1970s.
