{"id":12454,"date":"2023-09-14T15:28:59","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T14:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=12454"},"modified":"2023-11-08T09:47:35","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T09:47:35","slug":"goodby-events-seventieth-anniversary-death-dylan-thomas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/goodby-events-seventieth-anniversary-death-dylan-thomas\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor John Goodby contributing to three events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the death of poet Dylan Thomas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/john-goodby\">Professor John Goodby<\/a> (Professor of Arts and Culture, Sheffield Hallam University) will be a main contributor to three upcoming events that are being held to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the death of poet Dylan Thomas in 1953.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thursday 19 October 2023 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/yorkalive.com\/york-alive-events-continue-to-be-added-to-the-programme-all-the-time-see-below-for-our-full-event-list-to-date\/\">\u2018Dylan Thomas: 70 Years On\u2019 talk in the York Alive cultural festival. <\/a><\/strong>In this special event for York Alive on the seventieth anniversary of Thomas\u2019s death, Professor Goodby will be in conversation with Miles Salter about the poet\u2019s life and work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monday 23 October 2023 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/offtheshelf.org.uk\/event\/smokedale-sheffield-in-dylan-thomass-filmscripts\/\">\u2018Smokedale: Sheffield in Dylan Thomas\u2019s Filmscripts &#8211; John Goodby and Alison Twells\u2019 . <\/a><\/strong>Professor Goodby will give new insights into this little-known aspect of Dylan Thomas\u2019s wartime writing, while cultural historian <a style=\"font-size: 0.95em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/alison-twells\">Professor Alison Twells<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em\"> (Professor of Social and Cultural History, Sheffield Hallam University) will chair the event and lead the subsequent Q&amp;A.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday 4 November 2023 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/latemusic.org\/christopher-ogorman-tenor-and-david-pipe-piano\/\">Marking the 70th anniversary of the death of poet Dylan Thomas as part of the Late Music lunchtime concerts series . <\/a><\/strong>Composers Philip Grange, Sadie Harrison, Hayley Jenkins, David Lancaster and Rhian Samuel all present new settings of Thomas\u2019 poetry. Professor Goodby (co-organiser, with David Lancaster of York St John University) will introduce the songs and his edition of the Collected Poems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/john-goodby\">John Goodby<\/a> is Professor of Arts &amp; Culture at Sheffield Hallam University. Professor Goodby\u2019s research specialisms are Irish writing, Welsh poetry, and British \/ US poetry, especially modernist poetry.
