Title: Contesting the visualisation of Gaza
\nSpeaker: Dr Anandi Ramamurthy<\/a> (Media Arts & Communication, SHU)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr Anandi Ramamurthy<\/a> is a Reader in Post\/Colonial Cultures, Department of Media Arts and Communication. Her research explores racism and imperialism in representation and resistance to this. She is the author of Imperial Persuaders: Images of Africa and Asian in British advertising(2003) and Black Star: Britain\u2019s Asian Youth Movements. <\/p>\n

During July-August 2014 it is estimated that Israel dropped 18-20,000 tons of explosives on Gaza, which led to the deaths of over 2,100 people with homes, hospitals, schools and whole districts obliterated to rubble. Photographs played a crucial role in mediating this devastation within corporate media, social media channels as well as in street protests and pickets. This presentation will explore the ways in which citizens as protestors and journalists acted to challenge the corporate media\u2019s control over the mediation of the bombing and consider the visual strategies they employed to contribute to a public\u2019s understanding of the Palestinian plight . <\/p>\n
