Lab4Living: What\u2019s on in the White Building March 2023<\/h1>\n

This month the White Building hosts Postgraduate Open Day activities, workshops and seminars with groups of Nursing and Social Care students, community groups, a pop-up exhibition by Art and Design students, and Lab4Living Cinema Club.<\/p>\n

As part of a varied programme of activities and meet-ups this month, Lab4Living welcomes a range of community groups, healthcare practitioners, researchers, and students from across the University into the White Building\u2019s flexible space. Our unique space in the heart of the city is a vibrant hub, playing host to an exhibition, seminars, workshops, an Open Day and Lab4Living Cinema Club<\/p>\n

MA Design For Health Open Day<\/h2>\n

On 8 March, Sheffield Hallam University has its first\u00a0Post-graduate open day<\/a>\u00a0of the year. Course leader\u00a0Dr Carlos Peralta<\/a>\u00a0hosted prospective students for the\u00a0MA Design For Health<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0PGCert courses<\/a>\u00a0in the White Building. Care and Kindness workshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On Tue 7 March, No\u00e9mie Soula and Michael Tan led a \u2018Care and Kindness\u2019 workshop<\/a> of creative activities for Sheffield Hallam Mental Health Nursing Students to use during their Community Placements.<\/p>\n

The aim for the designed sessions was to promote care, kindness, trust and bonding, and to foster young people\u2019s caring sensibilities and awareness of others. No\u00e9mie and Michael put together a suite of activities for students to use for their community placements at three different schools in and around Sheffield.<\/p>\n

We hope to create a space where we can share, play, gain new insights and perhaps re-imagine what it is to be older.<\/p>\n

There was incredible student engagement at the workshop, with stimulating discussions. We are looking forward to getting more feedback after the students\u2019 placement finishes at the end of June.<\/p>\n

Bio-Hacking as Design Practice pop-up exhibition<\/h2>\n

This pop-up exhibition on 13 March in the White Building presented the work of Sheffield Hallam University MA Design students working with Lab4Living researchers on the theme of BioHacking. Visitors were invited on a speculative journey about the human\u2019s future, challenging us to rethink and reinvent the interplay between humans, nature and technology.<\/p>\n

Ethics and politics of care and technology<\/h2>\n

Michael Tan and No\u00e9mie Soula led an Ethics and politics of care and technology seminar and workshop<\/a>\u00a0in the White Building last week with Sheffield Hallam University Social Care students. In the session, they shared research and creative methods to explore the ethics and politics of care and technology and support the students\u2019 learning.<\/p>\n

This session was an opportunity to explore and develop partnerships to support learning on the Technology Enhanced Care in Social Care module within the University. Michael Tan, No\u00e9mie Soula and Ursula Ankeny designed a session involving two presentations on relevant Lab4Living projects (including\u00a0JIA<\/a>, Gestures of Care and\u00a0Print My Pain<\/a>) and approaches, a short workshop, and a seminar discussion on ethics and politics of care and technology.<\/p>\n

Film Club<\/h2>\n

Lab4Living hosts another\u00a0Cinema Club session<\/a>\u00a0as part of our staff \/ student\u00a0cultural networking group<\/strong>. This month, Graham Nesbitt hosts a session exploring the notion of identity, perception, and deception while pushing the audience to value the power of storytelling and its endless creativity. Contact\u00a0No\u00e9mie Soula<\/a>\u00a0if you\u2019re a staff member or SHU student who would like to join us at the next session.<\/p>\n

Other events this month<\/h2>\n

SHINDIG: Sheffield Dementia Involvement Group<\/h3>\n

Once again, Lab4Living (including PhD researcher and OT\u00a0Marney Walker<\/a>) welcomed SHINDIG to the White Building, a group which meets four times per year. The group offers people with dementia and their supporters informal networking and the opportunity to have their voice heard around a particular topic or proposal for local services. SHINDIG is part of the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP) national network of dementia voices.<\/p>\n

Beautiful Voice workshop<\/h3>\n

Later this month,\u00a0Joe Langley<\/a> and Ursula Ankeny will be running another workshop on the Beautiful Voice project, which supports people who have had a stroke which affects their speech. Patients, carers and healthcare professionals will take part in a variety of activities to explore gamification and use of physical, hybrid and digital interactions to enhance home speech therapy.<\/p>\n
