Academics and students from Sheffield Hallam University have added to the new Ruskin Collection displays at the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Millennium Gallery reflecting on the impacts of flooding in Sheffield. Comes the Flood<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is a redisplay of the Ruskin Collection which reimagines objects from Sheffield\u2019s major floods and artworks of Venice as fragments from cities destroyed by rising waters caused by climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acting and Performance Students from Sheffield Hallam University have\u00a0<\/span>worked with Sheffield Museums to <\/span><\/span>produce audio stories and Creative Writing students have added labels which tell the stories of the artefacts through writing and poetry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition also features the Ark Sheffield project<\/a>, a city-wide conversation about the climate crisis started by Dr Tom Payne<\/a> and Dr Julia Udall<\/a> at Sheffield Hallam University, and Dr Alex De Little<\/a>, Goldsmiths University.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside this are sound clips from workshops with people in Sheffield reflecting on what the flood means to them and talking about what they would take with them or leave behind in a flood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Chris Jones<\/a>, from Sheffield Hallam University, said:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThis was\u00a0<\/span>a great opportunity<\/span>\u00a0for our students to\u00a0<\/span>write<\/span>\u00a0poems and text for a public audience. They can visit and see their work represented on the walls of the gallery, it must be a great feeling to have, seeing your work\u00a0<\/span>exhibited<\/span>\u00a0in a popular museum.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The gallery looks at how\u00a0<\/span>Victorian artist and writer <\/span>John Ruskin\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span>\u00a0his collection in Sheffield to help people find inspiration in art and nature and explores the relevance of his ideas today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ruskin commissioned many works of art recording the architecture of Venice. Ruskin had predicted what was to come, that the city would soon be unrecognisable due to the impact of environmental change and poor building conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sheffield Museums are running a tour of the exhibition<\/a> at the Millennium Gallery with Curator of the Ruskin Collection, Ashley Gallant on 22 February 2023.<\/p>\n
