This special event, presented by the Centre for Culture, Media and Society<\/strong> at Sheffield Hallam University, will explore and celebrate the 1956 rock \u2019n\u2019 roll exploitation movie Rock around the Clock<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Hosted in SHU\u2019s purpose-built cinema, The Void<\/strong> (Owen Building, Room 123), the event will begin with a brief introduction before a rare screening of Rock around the Clock <\/em>on a 35mm print <\/strong>from the BFI National Archive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The screening will then be followed by a talk from leading film scholar Dr<\/strong> Yannis Tzioumakis<\/strong> (University of Liverpool) on its producer, Sam Katzman, and its influence as the first rock \u2019n\u2019 roll exploitation film.<\/p>\n

For anyone unable to make it in person, the talk will be streamed online via Zoom<\/strong>. A link will be distributed to all who register<\/a>, and there will be an opportunity for those attending online to participate in a Q&A session after the talk. (Please note that the film screening will not be streamed, only the talk and Q&A.)<\/p>\n

\u2018Exploiting around the Clock:<\/strong> Sam Katzman and the Genesis of the Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll Film\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

This paper revisits the production history of the film\u00a0Rock around the Clock<\/em>\u00a0(1956), with a view to shedding light on how exploitation filmmaking was practised by prolific Hollywood producer Sam Katzman. Often referred to as \u2018the king of exploitation cinema\u2019, Katzman worked at breakneck speed, allowing him to capitalise on trends and fads through the swift production of low-budget films exploiting their ephemeral visibility in popular culture. Made for Columbia Pictures, Rock around the Clock<\/em>\u00a0was arguably Katzman\u2019s crowning achievement, not only proving a big box-office hit internationally but also launching a cycle of films that celebrated rock \u2019n\u2019 roll music while targeting an emerging teen demographic. It thereby became one of the prototypical teenpics of the 1950s. The paper will provide a nuanced understanding of exploitation-film practices and the ways these are determined by the relationship between a producer and a distributor.<\/p>\n

Dr Yannis Tzioumakis<\/strong> is Reader in\u00a0Film and\u00a0Media Industries at the University of Liverpool. He is the author of\u00a0six\u00a0books, most recently Rock around the Clock: Exploitation, Youth Culture and the Origins of Rock \u2019<\/em>n’ Roll<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(with Si\u00e2n Lincoln),\u00a0and co-editor of\u00a0seven collections.\u00a0He is\u00a0currently\u00a0working on books about Hollywood runaway productions in Greece\u00a0and\u00a0the major studio Paramount.\u00a0Yannis\u00a0also co-edits the Routledge book series, \u2018Hollywood Centenary\u2019 and \u2018Cinema and Youth Cultures\u2019.<\/p>\n
