{"id":1081,"date":"2016-02-23T13:00:06","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T13:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=1081"},"modified":"2017-03-06T17:28:48","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T17:28:48","slug":"research-seminar-chris-roast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/research-seminar-chris-roast\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday 23 February 2016 &#8211; Lunchtime seminar with Dr Chris Roast (Computing, SHU)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Title: Visualising maths&#8230;Getting stuck with spreadsheets<br \/>\nSpeaker: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/chris-roast\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Chris Roast<\/a> (Computing, SHU)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This talk will cover various aspects of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/what-we-do\/projects\/information-technology-and-interactions\/equs-enhancing-the-quality-and-usability-of-spreadsheets\" target=\"_blank\">EQUS project<\/a> \u2013 which looks at enhancing the quality and usability of spreadsheet.  The EQUS innovation aims to make the relationship between spreadsheet functionality and its visual representation easier to understand, addressing the difficulties of comprehending the textual form. The innovation will operate as a Microsoft Excel plug-in that automatically displays a more fit for purpose visualisation of formula. The approach will determine improved approaches to representing, conditions, computations, processes and functions that can be used in formula.<\/p>\n<p>This solution should help ensure a better understanding of spreadsheets as a tool.
