Hester Reeve takes up residency at Kunsthuis SYB

Hester Reeve at KCL

Hester Reeve, artist and Reader in Fine Art in the Art & Design Research Centre (ADRC), has just completed the first part of her joint residency at Kings College London (KCL) and at Kunsthuis SYB in The Netherlands.

Based at the Centre for Philosophy and the Visuals Arts (CVPA) at KCL, Hester has been working with Dr John Callanan on Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. In this standard work, Kant raises questions about morality: is it possible to determine when an action is morally justified? And is morality not just a human invention? In his lecture series, John Callanan analyses Kant’s theories on the nature of moral value, a theme that corresponds with Hester’s own practice. Hester’s research has been exploring how thinking conceptually about art’s possibilities can facilitate new agendas for making, composition and materials.

Hester now departs for the Frisian village of Beetsterzwaag for the final part of her residency at CPVA’s partner institute, Kunsthuis SYB.  Following on from the period of research and reflection at CVPA, the six-week residency at Kunsthuis SYB is a time to create new work for exhibition.  Hester will be paired with both a curator from the programming committee and a writer to create space for developing theoretical research, as well as a second layer of dialogue and interaction.

At the end of the stay at Kunsthuis SYB there will be an exhibition of work in progress, scheduled for the weekend of 21-22 of October.
