A tour of the sites of the Music halls and taverns of West Bar Sheffield.
Starting at 17.15 from Stoddart building returning to Owen building by 18.45.
This short walking tour takes in the sites of the old music halls of Sheffield, which were mainly situated in the West Bar Area (The Shaftesbury Avenue of Sheffield). Find out the difference between the high culture of the Surrey Street Music Hall, where performers included Charles Dickens and Paganini, and the more down to earth music halls where drinkers could watch Marie Lloyd, comedians and animal acts.
Why did so many music halls burn down and why did the puritans want variety palaces to take their place? Former manager of Sheffield theatres, Chris Reece will explain all. The tour will last an hour and a half and will focus on the Grey to Green project refurbishment of West Bar.
