Fire Safety Information

On hearing the fire alarm

  • ALWAYS leave the building quickly. The emergency may be a fire or it may be a different type of emergency.
  • Leave directly. If you are not in your office, do not divert or return to collect belongings. It could cost you your life.
  • Look for the green exit signs in the corridors and follow them to the nearest exit route. This is not necessarily the same way you came in.
  • Obey your fire marshalls. In the event of a fire or other evacuation, they will be identified by their high-vis jackets. You can see a list of fire marshals for Arundel on the health and safety site here.
  • Move quickly to your assembly point; for Arundel this is at Pinball Park, alongside the HUBs building (a map of all assembly points is available here).
  • Don’t try and re-enter the building until you are given the all-clear from SHU Security, or from the fire marshals, or from the firefighters if they are in attendance.
  • Just because the alarm is silenced it does not mean the emergency is over.

General fire safety:

  • Don’t wedge fire doors open. They form part of the fire-walls which prevent fire and smoke spreading.
  • Don’t move fire extinguishers from their brackets; they are there for a reason.
  • Don’t leave objects in escape corridors where they become obstacles to people who may need to escape quickly.

Information for teaching staff:

  • If you are in charge of students, it is your responsibility to ensure that they leave the building quickly and that they go to the assembly point.

Alarm Testing

  • There will be weekly tests of the fire alarm in the building every Monday morning.

Emergency Phone

Arundel works partially on the VoIP data network.  If the network goes down, the phone will not work. In the case of an emergency, traditional type phones which does not require any logging on are available.
