Lifecycle themes

assessment-journey-lifecycleThe Assessment Design and Delivery (ADD) Framework is based on the 9 themes of the Assessment Lifecycle.  Information about each theme is outlined below.

1. Specifying (curriculum level)

This theme covers course assessment design, relevant at the point of course review and, or course approval or validation, together with inclusive practice and modification.

The resources within this theme will provide clear protocols and guidance to staff around design principles for good assessment and feedback practice that are learner focused, fair and equitable, and define: intended learning outcomes, feedback protocols, whilst exploring course-centred assessment.

2. Setting (assessment level)

This theme covers the setting of assessment tasks, feedback approaches and assessment criteria, relevant when detailed assessment and re-assessment tasks are being written, together with verification and moderation.

The resources within this theme will provide guidance to staff around setting assessment and reassessment task information.

3. Supporting

This theme provides guidance to staff around inclusivity, equality and diversity that can help support the assessment process together with the policies and processes for extenuating circumstances, inclusive practice, learning contracts and academic misconduct.

It also covers the support provided to staff around display screen equipment assessments and training associated with online practice.

4. Submitting / Sitting

This theme covers information around the submission of assessment tasks (including portfolios), originality checking and the protocols for sitting exams.

The resources within this theme will provide clear guidance on how to submit work online as well as other ways of submitting work, an outline of good practice and a recommended process for originality checking, together with detailed information on exam protocols.

5. Marking and Feedback

This theme covers guidance and information on the different options available for marking and providing feedback online as well as alternative methods for offline practice.

The resources within this theme will provide clear guidance to staff around effective marking and feedback practice together with guidance for internal and external moderation.

6. Recording marks

This theme covers guidance around how marks are recorded in the Blackboard Grade Centre for all assessment tasks.

The resources within this theme provide guidance to staff around entering marks online, marking deadlines and missing marks.

7. Returning marks and feedback

This theme covers guidance around the entering and release of provisional marks and feedback to students for both course work and exams.

The resources within this theme will provide clear guidance to staff around entering and releasing marks and feedback to students within the required timescales.

8. Boards

This theme covers guidance around the assessment board process for board chairs, members and external examiners.

The resources within this theme will provide clear guidance to staff to support them with the assessment board processes.

9 Reflecting and Reviewing

This theme provides guidance around how staff can reflect on and review the assessment experience and delivery through the annual review process which operates at module and course level.

The resources within this theme will provide clear guidance to staff around how feedback from various sources can be used to inform future design and delivery of assessment.
