{"id":2732,"date":"2017-03-08T10:46:45","date_gmt":"2017-03-08T10:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/lead\/?p=2732"},"modified":"2017-03-24T14:43:49","modified_gmt":"2017-03-24T14:43:49","slug":"upcoming-event-enhancing-inclusivity-in-induction-and-transitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/add\/2017\/03\/08\/upcoming-event-enhancing-inclusivity-in-induction-and-transitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Upcoming Event: Enhancing Inclusivity in Induction and Transitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many\u00a0students find the transitions into, through and out of\u00a0university difficult, especially if they have a\u00a0disability or come from international or non-traditional backgrounds.\u00a0\u00a0Evidence shows that\u00a0support for these students during key periods of transition can have a significant impact on their sense of belonging and influence the quality of their university experience.\u00a0 It is really important, then, that\u00a0we\u00a0develop ways to give <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">all students<\/span> the support\u00a0they need to settle in to university life, to flourish as confident,\u00a0autonomous learners and to leave us\u00a0ready to thrive as\u00a0&#8216;world-ready citizens&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>This workshop is for staff who are interested in\u00a0improving\u00a0the way they support transitions\u00a0by enhancing inclusivity. In\u00a0the workshop, you will develop\u00a0your own project with guidance from experienced colleagues and you\u00a0will be supported in implementing your initiative\u00a0after the event via a network of peers.\u00a0 You will need to come to the workshop\u00a0with an initial\u00a0idea for a practice development, \u00a0but this can be broad and embryonic. Project ideas\u00a0could include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Development of induction activities to support\u00a0mature students, students in work, commuter students or\u00a0students from other countries\/cultures.<\/li>\n<li>Review of personal tutoring\/academic advising approaches to nurture a sense of belonging, promote engagement and enhance attainment for a diverse\u00a0community of students.<\/li>\n<li>Design of flexible\u00a0Personal Development Planning (PDP)\u00a0resources\u00a0which are suitable for and accessible to a range of students with different needs, abilities and aspirations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Who should attend?: <\/strong>\u00a0If your project idea\u00a0involves a team of colleagues, we strongly encourage you to attend as a team, rather than send a single representative to ensure that you get the most out of the workshop activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What next?
