  • actively want to move beyond your comfort zone, but are unsure where or how to begin
  • believe you would benefit from a supported face to face approach

You need to attend all four sessions:

  • have low confidence in technology, experiences don’t feel easy and you’d like a more positive relationship with and attitude to technology.
  • describe technology as overwhelming
  • feel reluctant to try new things and confused by options
  • want to move beyond your comfort zone, but find it hard to make headway
  • believe a lighter touch, facilitated online approach will work for you

Participants need to commit to spend 2 hours per week over four weeks engaging with this online course and fellow online participants. From w/c 25th February 2019 to w/e 22nd March 2019. There will be additional optional drop-in sessions arranged during the course.

Booking for this course is now closed. If you are interested in similar future events, please email shucpd@shu.ac.uk.

What to expect

While each course takes a slightly different approach – (gradual scaffolding of technology in the face to face version, and more self-driven discovery in the online version) the topics for each week are the same, – they support the development of effective habits and constructive approaches; and take the participant through a cycle of personal reflection, using strategy, building resilience,  and exploration build resilience and confidence.

Week 1 – Reflection into Strategy
The first week comprises activities and discussion designed to allow reflection on the role of technology in our lives, to understand our feelings and responses to it, and to challenge some of the beliefs and assumptions we hold. Participants will begin to consider simple strategies for building a more positive relationship with technology.

Week 2 – Strategy into Resilience
This week looks in more depth at strategies, in particular for problem solving and for keeping up with technology. We’ll find personal meaning in the fast evolving concepts, relate them to aspects of our lives, and examine their impact on our behaviours and skill-sets. There will also be focus on personal agency, decision making and mental health.

Week 3 – Resilience into Exploration
This week we’ll explore the not-so-distant future of technology and its impact on society, education, health and industry. Participants identify and start work on a self-defined achievable personal project and – discovery, experimentation or problem solving.

Week 4 – Exploration into Experience
Participants will complete their personal project, reflect on thinking and set out their own strategy for next steps.
