Managing student behaviour in taught sessions
About the session
This 1 hour session introduced participants to the principles of promoting positive behaviour in the higher education learning environment. It focused on the underlying causes of misbehaviour and the importance of understanding the social, emotional and behavioural skills of students and ourselves. This also acknowledged how our own behaviour impacts on students’ behaviour.
The session highlighted the importance of planning for positive behaviour in our teaching sessions, providing information on strategies and practical approaches to handling challenging themes & for the effective management of difficult situations.

This session was aimed at academic staff at an:
- Introductory level – session introduces core concepts; suitable for someone relatively new to the topic
- Intermediate level – session suitable for individuals who possess working knowledge of the concept/topic wishing to expand knowledge/experience
What next?
Participants will have an increased understanding of some of the underlying causes of misbehaviour, the importance of social, emotional and behavioural skills for all & the importance of managing our own behaviours. This will allow participants to reflect on their practice & consider what steps they may take to promote positive student behaviour in their teaching sessions.
