Upcoming event: The Sheffield Hallam Prevent Course
About the session
The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, places a duty on higher education institutions, amongst others, to have due regard to the need to prevent people being drawn into terrorism (the “Prevent Duty”). Universities also have a general legal duty to secure freedom of speech on campus, within the law.
The Sheffield Hallam Prevent Course has been developed to provide an overview for staff on the Prevent duty and focuses on raising general awareness of Prevent amongst all staff.
The course will be deliver by the People Development Team, HR&OD and is delivered in two ways – via the e-learning module and via a workshop. The material in the e-learning module and the workshop is the same, so staff won’t need to compete both.
The session will be a an hour-long interactive workshop and will provide the opportunity for staff to discuss the key issues in the Prevent duty. The workshop will take place on a regular basis and is available for any member of staff to book on.

Who is it for?
The workshop is for all university staff. The objectives:
- What is Prevent?
- The Prevent duty in Higher Education – what must be done
- Definitions of terrorism, extremism and radicalisation
- What is ‘Channel’?
- Specific Sheffield Hallam information – policies, procedures and staff responsibility
