SHU hosts Personal Tutoring and Academic Advising 4th National Seminar

Last month, colleagues in LEAD were delighted to host The Centre for Recording Achievement’s 4th annual seminar on Personal Tutoring and Academic Advising.

The backdrop for this sold out event was the Hertha Ayrton STEM Atrium, where we welcomed more than 40 colleagues from across the country to explore together Contemporary Narratives and Developing Practice in Academic and Personal Tutoring.

Speakers included Mike Laycock, author of the Personal Tutoring SEDA Special who examined successful institutional strategies for personal tutoring.

Other speakers included Alison Wilkinson and Ben Walker, from the University of Lincoln who described their Intervention for Success Project,

Steve Outram, CRA Director looked at the Personal Tutoring and Academic Advising narratives in institutions that achieved a TEF Gold award.

Cathy Malone with Emma Heron and Alison McCamley from Sheffield Hallam University reflected on close one to one tutorial work with students and traced this influence on their personal and institutional practice.

Sam Dent, from the University of Sheffield, described the success of the HEFCE-funded Raising Awareness, Raising Aspiration (RARA) Project linking personal tutoring to academic success.

The final session of the day launched of the third cohort of the very successful CRA – SEDA Award in Personal Tutoring and Academic Advising. We have 14 staff, across all faculties at Sheffield Hallam University, taking the course this year.
