Upcoming Event: Enhancing Inclusivity in Induction and Transitions

Many students find the transitions into, through and out of university difficult, especially if they have a disability or come from international or non-traditional backgrounds.  Evidence shows that support for these students during key periods of transition can have a significant impact on their sense of belonging and influence the quality of their university experience.  It is really important, then, that we develop ways to give all students the support they need to settle in to university life, to flourish as confident, autonomous learners and to leave us ready to thrive as ‘world-ready citizens’.

This workshop is for staff who are interested in improving the way they support transitions by enhancing inclusivity. In the workshop, you will develop your own project with guidance from experienced colleagues and you will be supported in implementing your initiative after the event via a network of peers.  You will need to come to the workshop with an initial idea for a practice development,  but this can be broad and embryonic. Project ideas could include, for example:

• Development of induction activities to support mature students, students in work, commuter students or students from other countries/cultures.
• Review of personal tutoring/academic advising approaches to nurture a sense of belonging, promote engagement and enhance attainment for a diverse community of students.
• Design of flexible Personal Development Planning (PDP) resources which are suitable for and accessible to a range of students with different needs, abilities and aspirations.

Who should attend?:  If your project idea involves a team of colleagues, we strongly encourage you to attend as a team, rather than send a single representative to ensure that you get the most out of the workshop activities.

What next? You will leave the workshop with a completed project plan and an evaluation strategy. You will have a mentor who will continue to support you through the implementation stages of your project.
