CANCELLED: Black History in Britain : a review
October 1 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This short session aims to provide a context for understanding current debates about race/ethnicity and education. The population of the UK has always been ethnically diverse, and different agencies have over the years sought to engage with and address issues concerning race. Despite arguments about living in a post racial society – what this exercise also reveals is the repetitiveness of history, policy and attitudes concerning race. Flynn (2015) indicates one of the main challenges in workaround ameliorating gaps is the challenge of moving from an individual recognition to a more systemic understanding of racism. This interactive session aims to begin this conversation around defining and understanding structural and institutional racism and naming it in the professional spaces in which we inhabit.
