Every year for the past 23 years, SHU have been host to students from 57 primary and secondary schools, and colleges from across South and West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and North Lincolnshire, who have been coming together to compete in the Annual Pop Maths Quiz.
Initially started as a way to promote Maths as being fun, this annual event has grown year on year, and aims to teach children not just about Maths, but also key skills such as problem solving and team work.
As one organiser explained, ‘ The Pop Maths Quiz doesn’t just build communities of people learning Maths; it also builds communities of people wanting to teach it.’
There were four ages groups competing across four venues; Heartspace, Pennine Lecture Theatre, Hallam Hall and Chef Hallam Central. The winning teams were awarded a big trophy, and individual plaques and vouchers were given to the winning team members.
This year’s winners were:
Y6 – Dronfield Junior School
Y7-Y9 – High Storrs
Y10-Y11 – High Storrs
Y12-Y13 – King Edward VII
To round off the day, the quiz was followed by a guest lecture in Pennine entitled ‘Closing the Gap: the quest to understand prime numbers’ delivered by Vicky Neale from Oxford University.
With over a thousand pupils attending, supported by parents and teachers, this year’s event was a massive success with some great feedback being received from the schools involved. We look forward to hosting the 24th annual quiz next year and welcoming even more students through our doors.
